Plastic Recycling – Reboot as of 8.1.2026
The plastic recycling program at PUUF (for soft plastics which cannot go in our blue bins) has been rebooted with the following updates:
What changes:
- There is now a hanging scale for you to weigh your plastic so that you know how much there is. This should help you gauge your donation.
- You can now use text to give to pay. After the amount of your donation, type “plastic”
What doesn’t change:
- The plastic and our monetary donation still go to Endangered Concepts (www.ecoartists.org) for their sculptures of endangered animals
- The donation amount is $10/pound of plastic
- You can still pay with cash
- The program still accepts the soft and somewhat soft plastic that cannot go in our blue bins.
If you have any additional question about these changes please see Donna Green on Sunday morning or email her at d_e_green@sbcglobal.net
The Goal of Earth Care Ministry
To encourage more sustainable lifestyles through education and advocacy. On the first Sunday of the month, we host a table before and after service which has resources for living more sustainably. On that Sunday, we also offer a intergenerational education experience during the service. In the past, this has included adding compost and mulch to our fruit forest, making signs for the fruit forest and making seed balls with native wildflower seeds.
We are currently working to install a pollinator garden at the entrance to the Palomar UU building. This space will be filled with California native plants to attract butterflies, bees and other pollinators. We expect most of the planting to be done by the end of 2025. In 2026, we plan to add community art and a small education center.
We are still in the early stages of working toward more advocacy. So far, we have joined in a beach cleanup with Surfrider foundation. We are actively looking for more ways to connect with the community and community organizations around issues related to care of the Earth.
Earth Care Ministry and the Green Team work together closely to care for the grounds at PUUF. Earth Care does not currently meet regularly. We welcome new members and new ideas for this ministry. Help is needed to staff our monthly table and to help lead the monthly multi- generational education.
Origin of EarthCare Ministry
In January of 2020, more than sixty congregants met to talk about their love and worry for our home the planet Earth. The morning was filled with discussion and brainstorming. What came from that gathering was the beginning of the Palomar UU EarthCare Ministry and a list of actions bubbled to the top.

The vision for EarthCare Ministry, for now, is to have a three-pronged plan through care and regeneration on our property, connection and deepening through education, and action in the community and with other organizations.
Look for the Earth Care updates via the Ways to Connect weekly email.
