Decolonize Your Soul – Indigenous Peoples Day | Words from Worship October 11, 2026
In honor of Indigenous People’s Day, and in recognition of the third anniversary of the beginning of Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza, we will look at the spiritual costs of colonialism here in San Diego County, the US, and around the world. How has 500+ years of colonialism shaped our thinking and shaped our souls? Whether our ancestors are among the colonizers or the colonized (or both!), we have absorbed spiritual untruths about what it means to be human. We have adapted to a “business as usual” that benefits the wealthy and powerful over the collective. We have commodified things that never should be commodified–even commodifying spirituality itself. Join us to explore what it means to shed our colonization, soul-wise, and be more fully alive.

Words from outside the San Diego Federal Building, October 8th, 2026
It’s no coincidence that most of the refugees and migrants and undocumented immigrants here are from lands colonized by the US and Europe. Whether in the Americas, in Africa, in Asia, in the Pacific, they are reeling from the legacy of colonialism. And the US under Trump is using those colonial laws more than ever: sending out ICE to profile and kidnap people, beating people in the streets, NOT giving asylum seekers their day in court, taking people to “detention centers” that meet the internationally recognized definitions of Concentration Camps. They are using this colonial system to deport people with nothing, and to deport people to strange lands where they have no ties. Even children. It is absolute cruelty. As people of faith, we affirm that there is another way: an entirely different way.

We Begin Again in Love | Words from Worship September 27, 2026
Our Unitarian Universalist values naturally lead us to have high aspirations of inclusion for everyone: people of all ages, racial/ethnic identities, dis/abilities, genders, sexual orientations, socioeconomic status, educational attainments, and more. Yet our human nature naturally leads us to fall short of that inclusion we dream of. In this month of “beginnings,” how can we move closer to co–creating a community of deeper inclusion?

Words from outside Otay Mesa Detention Center, September 27, 2026
My congregation and my religious denomination stands firmly for the rights of all people who migrate, who immigrate, who flee their homelands as refugees… every person deserves respectful treatment, due process, food, healthcare, dignity. Not because of who they are or aren’t, or where they were or weren’t born—they deserve it because they are people. Each person a unique, unrepeatable, sacred being.

The Washing of the Water | Words from Worship September 13, 2026
This week, in between the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks of 9/11/2001. How do we hold the pain of that event, and of everything that has happened, since? Our collective grief, moral injury, and even trauma can feel so heavy. Spiritual practices from our UU tradition—water communion—and the Jewish tradition—tachlich—invite water to cleanse and give life, and point us toward true healing, for ourselves, and for our planet.

How Are You, Really? Words from Worship August 9, 2026
Life has been intense. Well, “intense” doesn’t even begin to describe it. In addition to all the regular sources of challenges and stresses we each deal with, what we have been going through as a people—the assaults on our humanity, the endless onslaught of heartbreaking news, and the attempted robbery of our collective future—has required some newly-honed spiritual skills. How, in the midst of it, do we get in touch with how we really, really are doing without melting into a puddle on the floor? How do we speak with authenticity about what is happening in us and around us, and grow spiritually stronger, and more connected, as we do?
